An hour and a half from Jemaa el-Fna, the city disappears and the mountains take over. Imlil is the last village reachable by car at the head of the Aït Mizane valley, roughly 65 kilometres from Marrakech, and it is the starting point for the climb up Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. You don't need to be a hiker to spend a day here: terraced fields, walnut groves, stone villages clinging to the slope and cool mountain air are enough to put you in a completely different country by mid-morning.
Where Imlil actually is
Imlil sits at around 1,800 metres in the High Atlas, south of Marrakech. You reach it through Asni — a market town known for its Saturday souk — then along a mountain road that winds up the valley. The village itself is small: a few lanes, guesthouses, shops selling rugs and minerals, and plenty of mules, still the local way to carry loads further up.
It is the historic launch point for Toubkal ascents, and a fine destination in its own right for a single day out.
The drive from Marrakech
Expect about 65 kilometres and 1 hr 30 on the road. The first stretch crosses the Haouz plain, then the road starts climbing after Tahannaout. The final twenty kilometres are proper mountain driving: switchbacks, views that open all at once, ochre villages perched above the drop.

What to do in Imlil in one day
Walk up to Aroumd. The neighbouring village, perched on a spur facing the valley, is an easy hour on foot from Imlil. It is the best view in the valley for the least effort.
Climb towards Sidi Chamharouch. A steady path follows the river up to this small hamlet and its whitewashed shrine, roughly 2 hr 30 of ascent. It is the classic first stage of the Toubkal route and works perfectly as a day walk.
See the waterfall. Fifteen minutes from the village, a fall fed by snowmelt — short stroll, generous reward.
Have tea on a terrace. Several guesthouses and the well-known Kasbah du Toubkal open their terraces to visitors passing through: the whole valley spreads out below you.
Watch the valley work. Walnut trees, terraced plots, communal granaries: this is still a working mountain farming valley, and you see it at every bend.
What about Toubkal itself?
The summit stands at 4,167 metres. Climbing it is not a day trip: it takes two days minimum, with a night in a refuge, and it is prepared with a mountain guide — that is the safe and by far the most enjoyable way to do it, and it is the norm in Toubkal National Park. When to go
Spring (March–May) — the best window. Peaks still white, valley green, ideal walking temperatures.
Summer (June–August) — Imlil is the natural escape when Marrakech heats up. It is routinely around ten degrees cooler than the city, which makes it the most refreshing trip in the region.
Autumn (September–November) — superb light, walnut trees turning gold, very pleasant trails.
Winter (December–February) — snow comes down into the valley and the landscape turns spectacular. Bring proper shoes and a warm jacket; the road up to the village normally stays open.
Practical tips
- Closed shoes — even short paths are stony.
- One more layer than in Marrakech — it is noticeably cooler all year round.
- Water and a hat — altitude is deceptive and the sun is strong.
- Some cash — for tea, a local trail guide or a souvenir in the village.
- Leave early — morning light on the valley is the finest, and you get the whole day.
