Where Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate are
Aït Benhaddou sits on the southern side of the High Atlas, about 30 km before Ouarzazate on the road toward the desert. It's a ksar — a fortified earthen village of towers and courtyards, built along the banks of the Ounila River — and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. A handful of families still call it home, and its warm, sculpted walls have made it one of the most photographed sights in Morocco. Crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass
The road climbs to 2,260 metres at the Tizi n'Tichka, the highest major paved pass in Morocco — a modern road, but a winding one, with sweeping viewpoints over the Atlas at every turn. What to do in a day
Cross into the ksar. A footbridge over the Ounila leads from the modern village to the old fortified one. Inside, narrow lanes climb between towers of packed earth toward a restored fortified granary at the top, with a wide view over the valley — well worth the short climb.
Take the classic viewpoint. The best-known photograph of Aït Benhaddou is from across the river, looking back at the whole ksar rising from the plain — arrive with a little time to spare for it.
Add Ouarzazate, if you like. Twenty minutes further, the Taourirt Kasbah — a former Glaoui palace with a maze of courtyards — and the film studios give a different side of the region: cinema rather than history. Your driver can include either or both, depending on your pace.
Look for a small workshop. A number of local artists sell sand paintings made with natural pigments right around the ksar — a distinctive Aït Benhaddou craft, and an easy souvenir to carry home.
